Erika Winstone will be presenting an installation at Shillam + Smith 3 that will incorporate a series of silverpoint drawings on canvas and drilled drawings into painted surfaces. The inspiration for the work is a video of auditions and performances for a children’s talent show together with appropriated footage of the original acts. Erika uses video as a screen through which to examine ideas of spontaneity and repetition. She draws repeatedly from the same sequence, investigating how acts of interpretation affect a constant. Through the layering of verbal and visual rhythms from footage of the performances from different periods, a synchronic energy is formed. During the first week she will be putting herself in the position of performer by making a large drilled work “live” in the gallery.
