TRAILERS AND LARGER WORKS
Erika Winstone will be showing new work consisting of an installation of video-based drawings at the Ruskin School of Drawing & Fine Art, Oxford University.
Winstone's work is drawn from videos she makes of her daughter at play in a range of relationships and contexts. Energy, time, space and 'jouissance' are key elements in the work. The drawings are made using silverpoint and goldpoint into white water-based grounds on canvas, and directly onto the gallery walls. Her daughter often also draws for a limited period on the work using the same materials. Writing is included within the range of marks, selecting phrases from the video dialogue which become a subsequent layer within the work.
The technology of video enables both the direct recording of everyday moments and a means of reflection upon their significance over time. The effect of time will become particularly apparent during the show with the works changing colour as the silver marks tarnish while the golden marks remain constant. Relationships are developed between the works with the smaller canvases often being trailers for the larger ones. The interpretative nature of the work is emphasised by the presence of works drawn from the same footage with quite different resolutions.
